Back in the days, gold and silver were the only materials used to make wedding rings. This may be because of traditional practices such as that found in the book of Edward VI: after the words 'with this ring I thee wed' follow the words 'This gold and silver I give thee', at which point the groom was supposed to hand a leather purse filled with gold and silver coins to the bride. It could also be because of the scarcity of the materials used to make a wedding ring. But nowadays, wedding rings are available in a wide variety of materials. Because of the huge demand for wedding rings that won't easily tarnish through time, highly resistant to scratches and beatings, and hypoallergenic, jewelers have found other materials that would suit the need perfectly such as the popular tungsten wedding band. Popular wedding rings today are as follows:
Gold Wedding Ring
Though gold has been the oldest form of material used to make any kind of rings, many are still using it as the main catalyst for wedding rings. Wedding rings are traditionally made of gold since it is long-lasting and unaffected by the passage of time. It is considered a suitable material for everyday wear as well as a metaphor for the relationship. To make it a lot more stronger, golden wedding rings are now hardened with copper and Silver or tin and bismuth.
Palladium Wedding Band
Palladium is one of the more recent materials used to make a wedding ring. As one of the platinum group metals, palladium share similar chemical properties with this group of metals which includes its natural white color. It's also used as an alternative to platinum or white gold. It is slightly whiter, much lighter and about 12% harder than platinum. Similar to gold, palladium can be beaten into a thin leaf form. But like platinum, it'll also develop a hazy patina over time.
Tungsten Wedding Band
Tungsten has also been one of the recent catalysts used to make a wedding ring. What makes a tungsten wedding band so popular with couples is its toughness. It is highly resistant to scratches and beatings, hypoallergenic, and requires little or no polishing. A tungsten wedding band is one of the perfect wedding rings for relationships that would last a lifetime.
Titanium Wedding Rings
Though popularly known for indestructible properties, Titanium is in fact quite soft but extremely tough. It will take on small rub marks quite quickly but will resist deformation due to abuse or accidents and will not wear thin like precious metals.
Platinum Wedding Rings
Popular for its hardness and soft white finish, platinum wedding rings are getting a lot more popular with the couples. Platinum and white alloys of gold are also used, although the slightly yellow "white" gold alloys of the past have been largely replaced by a cheaper nickel-gold alloy, covered with a thin plating of rhodium which must be reapplied after some years of wear.
These are only some of the materials currently being used to make wedding rings. Other metals such as silver, copper, or brass do not occur as often as those precious metals because they corrode over time and thus do not convey a sense of permanence. Aluminum and tin causes slight skin reaction when combined with acid such as sweat.
